Bill Vestal stands in the rubble of his home and his business in Moffat, Colo., on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019. A juggler and a 17-year resident, he watched as a blaze ravaged his home and craft factory for he and his wife's business, Crystal Stix, just feet away from the Moffat Fire Department on Tuesday afternoon. The fire, of unknown origin, burned down four structures, spanning nearly an entire city block, but no injuries were reported. Vestal and his wife lost not only their home, but their craft factory which he had used for nearly two decades to build crystal stix, a type of juggling baton that he traveled the country selling and performing with.

Emmitt Davis, a transgender man, sits with his girlfriend on a couch in his front yard near Hancock Expressway on a warm June afternoon, where he was attacked by three men April 6. Two of the men jumped the fence to cut through the yard when they and then started yelling slurs about Davis’ sexuality before leaving and returning with another man. Davis suffered a broken nose and orbital fracture in the attack.He said the incident has made him more nervous, but that it hasn’t deterred him from spending the majority of his time at home in his yard. “All the neighbors I live with make me feel better, one even put a shovel outside of their house just in case anything like that were to happen again,” he said.
